Are facial extractions safe? Will you recommend Deep Pore Cleansing or Extraction facials?

When we think of facial extractions the first thing to come to mind is those nasty videos extracting horrendous blackheads, or those odd-looking tools popping our beloved pimples and torturing our skin for a solid good hour, right?

For us Aestheticians, a synonym of "extractions" will be "happiness". Despite the temporary discomfort, the benefits for the skin are definitely worth it, by deeply cleansing pores and removing stuck blackheads, we’ll prevent more blackheads, acne congestion and even scarring. Believe me when I say "happiness" that's the exact feeling when we clear acne from people's face.

We breakdown the benefits, the process, before and after tips, and ultimately, help you decide whether you should or not give it a try. Here is what you need to know about Extraction Facials:

What is an Extraction Facial?

In simple terms, Extraction Facial are a form of deep pore cleansing. It involves specific knowledge, techniques and skills to get rid of all the trapped gunk, particularly blackheads and whiteheads. Unlike regular at home cleansing or exfoliating, it offers a more hardworking approach as it focuses on each individual pore, carefully and manually clearing them from any deep-seated junk such as sebum, dirt, dead skin cells, pus and bacteria.

Are facial extractions safe for your skin?

Despite the horror stories many of us may have heard, facial extractions are actually safe for the skin, here I will give you 2 great reasons for that.

#1 The specific target are clogged pores, which are the root cause for many common skin problems, from rough skin and a dull complexion to more serious conditions like acne.

#2 Monthly deep cleansing facials triggers an array of many amazing benefits for your skin, from healthy-glowing skin to reverse aging.

Leave the hard work to the professionals

At-home facials and extractions are much less invasive in nature and only really work on surface level impurities, attempting to do this yourself comes with its fair share of risks for a number of reasons:

1.     Squeezing or popping a pimple leaves the skin torn and inflamed, this tearing may leave behind a scar, especially if the technique is wrong or it is not given enough time to heal.

2.     Most at home popping won’t clear the pore of the root or the complete extraction causing comedones and pimples to get more irritated and infected.

3.     Not all pores are identical. In simple professional language, this means that some pores are not suitable for extractions; for example: Blackheads, yes. Whiteheads, depends. Active acne or pimples, no. Pustules or cysts with no visible head, double no. Now you get the picture!

4.     Professional-Post-Extraction Control (PPEC) is very important to seal pores and kill bacteria, home remedies won’t have the level of active ingredients as medical grade products and devices.

Basically; popping pimples requires knowledge and experience, for this reason, leaving facial extractions to the professionals is the wisest decision you can make for the sake of your skin. As an Aesthetician we are able to recognize what type of pimple we are popping, cases like milia, inflammatory acne, comedones, pustules, cysts, papules, blisters, or sebaceous hyperplasia are very hard to recognize.

That said, if you’re ready to get them done by a professional, here’s what you can expect from your facial!

What to expect after your Acne Facials With Extractions?

The healing process depends on the condition of your skin and how severe your breakouts or skin issues were. Ideally, it may take between five to seven days at most. That is, of course, alongside proper aftercare habits and religiously following instructions from your aesthetician.

Do blackheads return after facial extractions?

Yes. It’s important to remember that extractions aren’t a one-time solution. When acne is present you will need to do weekly treatments combined with laser therapy to clear the bacteria. Your pores are constantly exposed to factors like pollution, dirt, natural sebum production, which means pore clogging is inevitable. Laser therapy and good medical grade oil control products will be a huge help.

At home skincare?

Ask your aesthetician which are the right products for you to keep your skin consistently clean and gunk-free.

Change your pillowcases?

We recommend switching your pillowcases at least once a week, ideally every other day, specially before and after your acne facial.

How often should you get facial extractions?

We recommend getting a facial with extractions once a week until face is completely free of clutter, after that once a month, this will allow your skin’s top layer to naturally heal before you come in for your next session. In between, make sure to keep your skin as healthy as possible by following your aestheticians advise.

How to calm skin after extractions?

There are a few home remedies you can easily do to help calm your skin after extractions! These include applying a clean ice pack or cold compress to soothe the discomfort and reduce the redness, but the best way to heal your skin after an extraction is to give it time.

Do not overwork or exfoliate your skin after extractions.

After your facial extraction session, follow a gentle skincare routine until your skin is fully healed. This includes gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers to calm and hydrate the skin. Avoid strong products like skin acids, heavy-duty creams, exfoliants while the skin is still open and healing. Avoid applying heavy make-up for the next few days just to give your skin time to breathe and heal. The best alternative is skin friendly, non-comedogenic products to prevent them forming in the first place and the best advice; Listen to your aesthetician.
